HEAVENS ABOVE

On August 29, 2008, Joseph Parsons released his 7th studio CD, ‘Heavens Above’. Made in the inspired musical cities of Philadelphia and Paris, Parsons has delivered his most ambitious work to date.

Followers of Parsons' recorded music will notice some changes this time around as the collection hues closer to the intensity and honesty of his live shows. After a year of emotional chaos: burying his father & leaving his American homeland to live in Europe, Joseph realized that these specific songs needed to be recorded. “Most of these are newer songs I thought would never see the light of day,” says Parsons. “These are songs that in the past I would have been afraid to record for some reason or another. Songs that leave me feeling very exposed.”

Parsons reflected on his previous work and felt it was time to make an unambiguous artistic statement. “For years, I have messed around, production & song - wise, as a way to avoid the simple truth that my songs may not be as mainstream or as widely accepted as I and some people around me had hoped. And finally, I am comfortable with that. These new songs are from the heart and at this time in my life, that's what matters most.”

It is a fearless record.

Parsons goes on to say, “I had gone as far as I could go in terms of producing my own records. After ‘The Vagabond Tales’ (2005 Blue Rose Records) and ‘The Fleury Sessions’ (2006 Blue Rose Records), I realized I could not produce this new record alone and needed some additional production talent to gain some emotional distance from the songs. I wanted to make a deeper, more honest record so I brought Devin Greenwood (Norah Jones, Amos Lee) in to help me ‘translate’ the songs. He’s an old friend and I trusted him from the first take. And that's exactly what I needed to feel”. Returning to mix and master the record is Grammy Award winner Phil Nicolo (John Lennon, The Hooters, G-Love.)

Parsons explores his personal challenges and, in so doing, takes his character studies to a whole new level on ‘Heavens Above’. One of the standout tracks, the REM influenced title track 'Heavens Above', follows a roughneck during hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, back into the city to find his family and reflects the chaos he found. ‘Dume Room’ is from a Zuma Beach biker bar that tells the story of a Southern Californian 'troll' (a vagabond with a mysterious aura). ‘Anyone’ is a reflection on losing someone who you grew to rely on as totem or moral guidepost, and how it affects your ability to be the person you are or to become.

Es ist nicht lange her, da war Joseph Parsons, der sympathische Barde von der amerikanischen Ostküste, mit seinem Freund und Kollegen Todd Thibaud bei uns noch als Duo unterwegs und mit einer gemeinsamen CD dazu im Gepäck. Jetzt präsentiert er ein brandaktuelles Soloprojekt. Rechtzeitig zu seinem 10-jährigen Jubiläum auf Blue Rose erscheint mit Heavens Above ein neues Album - es ist bereits das 6. in Folge des neben Steve Wynn, Rich Hopkins und eben Thibaud wohl beständigsten Blue Rose-Künstlers.

Joseph Parsons, Jahrgang 1964, wuchs in Pennsylvania auf, zog später nach Los Angeles, Boston, New York und Louisiana, machte Musik auf den Straßen von Barcelona und anderen europäischen Metropolen, arbeitete 1991 im Rahmen des Anti Gulf War Peace Teams in Kinderheimen in Bagdad. Seit den frühen 90ern wurde Parsons in Philadelphia sesshaft, nach einigen frühen Privatplatten startete er professionell bei Blue Rose Anfang 98 mit dem von der Kritik begeistert aufgenommenen 5 A.M. Ein Jahr später folgte das selbstbetitelte Album Joseph Parsons, Live In Europe bot danach feinen Stoff seiner 99er Deutschland-Tournee mit Begleitband. Im Herbst 2001 begann er mit seinen Kollegen Chris Burroughs, Terry Lee Hale und Todd Thibaud das Aufsehen erregende Projekt Hardpan. Eine Studio-CD und das aus der anschließenden Tour entstandene Live-Doppelalbum, beide ebenfalls auf Blue Rose erschienen, zählen zu den absoluten Highlights der jüngeren Labelgeschichte! Nach einem kurzen Abstecher bei 4 Way Street, einem weiteren All-Star-Quartett und ihrer einzigen CD Pretzel Park etablierte sich Joseph Parsons mit seinen jüngsten Alben The Vagabond Tales (2005) und The Fleury Sessions (2006) endgültig in der ersten Songschreiberliga! Ende des vergangenen Jahres spielte er mit Todd Thibaud in Rekordzeit das eingangs erwähnte Duoalbum Parsons Thibaud ein, um während der folgenden Europa-Gigs einen aktuellen Tonträger anbieten zu können. Beide präsentierten darauf sowohl Stücke ihres jeweiligen Backprogramms als auch ganz neue Rohdiamanten in ihren Urfassungen. Zwei davon, 'Skipping Stone' und ‚ Tell Me Hello’, hören wir nun im Kontext von Heavens Above wieder, in stark aktualisierten Arrangements.

Stichwort: Arrangements! Immer wieder ein gewichtiges Thema für den großen Blonden mit der so enorm ausdrucksstarken, unendlich geschmeidigen Stimme zwischen Tenor und Bariton. Auf früheren Platten hat er sich schon mal an soundtechnische Experimente gewagt, seine Musik mit programmierten Beats, Loops und Synthesizern untermalt, elektronische Effekte eingebaut. Später kehrte er zu handgemachten Produktionsweisen zurück, sein Spektrum reichte dabei vom Acoustic Troubadour mit karger Begleitung über den semi-akustisch/elektrischen Folk Rock seiner Touring Band bis zu ausladenden Studiosessions mit unterschiedlichen Musikern für einzelne Tracks. Auf Heavens Above verwendet Parsons bei rund der Hälfte der Stücke unaufdringliche, subtil arrangierte Streicher- und Bläserparts, die eine gewisse melancholische, leicht traurige Grundstimmung noch unterstreichen. Produzent, Multiinstrumentalist und Arrangeur Devin Greenwood (Denison Witmer, Norah Jones, Amos Lee, Innocence Mission) benutzt dieses kleine Orchester zielgerichtet für die Balladen, belässt die übrigen, stets milde angerockten, im Midtempo-Bereich angesiedelten Folk Rock-Nummern eher ursprünglich. Das ergibt im Gesamtbild einen lebendigen Fluss und erhält von der melodisch-poppigen Eröffnung mit dem Titelsong bis zum Abschluss von 'I Saw You' Spannung und Kurzweile. Highlights dazwischen sind u.a. 'Shades Of Gray', nicht das einzige Lied, das sich mit dem kürzlichen Tod seines Vaters auseinandersetzt, und das zusammen mit Elliott Murphy geschriebene 'Sitting On Top Of The World', auf dem der geschätzte Blue Rose-Kollege im Duett singt. 'Sky Boys' steht für einen eindringlichen Antikriegssong und demaskiert die Arroganz der Macht. 'Falling' ist eine wunderschöne Nummer mit weiblicher Harmoniestimme von Emiliana Zeitlyn. Harmonie - vielleicht das prägnanteste Attribut für Joseph Parsons im Allgemeinen und für Heavens Above im Besonderen!

Parsons spielt akustische und elektrische Gitarren, wird begleitet von Devin Greenwood am Bass und an verschiedenen Tasteninstrumenten (dazu Lap Steel, Akkordion, Percussion), Gitarrist/Keyboarder Ross Bellenoit (auch Ukulele, Lap Steel, Akkordion, Percussion) und Drummer Ivan Funk. Zusammen schaffen sie eine für Joseph Parsons typische Atmosphäre voller intimer Nähe und großer Gefühle, die den Hörer verführen und teilnehmen lassen - all das geschieht straight, ambitioniert und gleichzeitig lässig entspannt. Assoziationen zu James Taylor, Leonard Cohen, John Gorka, Richard Buckner, Marc Cohn, David Gray und Neal Casal werden da ganz offensichtlich.

Na het overlijden van zijn vader koos de uit Philadelphia afkomstige singer-songwriter Joseph Parsons voor een langdurig oriënterend verblijf in Europa. Tegenwoordig woont Parsons dan ook voor een groot deel van het jaar ergens in de EU. De globetrotter werd ondermeer gesignaleerd in Granada (Andalusië), Zweden, Parijs en natuurlijk in zijn tweede thuisland Duitsland. Dit land draagt Parsons muziek namelijk al jaren op handen. Met minimale middelen presteert deze Amerikaanse logé het daar in één maand zo’n vijfentwintig concertzalen vol te spelen. In de Benelux ligt dat echter wat genuanceerder daar is Parsons, door eerdere releases als 5AM, The Black Album, The Vagabond Tales en The Fleury Sessions, wereldberoemd bij slecht nog maar een klein publiek. Zijn hagel nieuwe CD Heavens Above werd geproduceerd door niemand minder dan Davin Greenwood (Nora Jones en Amos Lee). I wanted to make a deeper, more vulnerable record so I brought Devin Greenwood in to help me reach the vision I had for these new songs.”

Parsons maakt zo zijn karakterstudies op deze nieuwe plaat. Op de een of andere manier hebben ze allen raakvlakken met zijn eigen manier van doen. Hierdoor klinkt de CD dan ook een stuk persoonlijker als zijn voorgangers. In het liedje “Heavens Above”, een REM georiënteerd liedje, volgt hij het leven van een roughnecker na de orkaan Katrina in New Orleans. Parsons, geboren in Monroe, Louisiana, volgt zijn desastreuze terugkeer in The Big Easy. Het strakke “Dume Room” gaat over een Zuma Beach biker bar, waar een paar niet pluis figuren rondhangen. Ook Parsons had ooit een L.A. droom en logeerde onder de palmbomen ergens op het enorme strand. In het liedje “Anyone” reflecteert Parsons zichzelf. Hij verloor zijn vader vorig jaar en hield ziels veel van hem. De gebeurtenissen hebben effect gehad op zijn persoon. Parsons daarover “it affects your ability to be yourself or know the person you are or could become”. Parsons gaat tekstueel maar ook muzikaal diep in het liedje “Shades Of Gray”. Het messcherpe akoestische slide gitaarspel en de mee liftende blazerssectie, tillen dit nummer naar het ultieme hoogtepunt op deze plaat. Hoewel Parsons er niet echt mee bezig is weet hij weldegelijk hoe mainstream liedjes moeten klinken. “Sitting On Top Of The World” en “Skipping Stone” kleven terdege en kunnen zo de hitlijsten in. Phil Nicolo (Sting, Billy Joel en 16 Horsepower), die ook The Vagabond Tales af mixte, laat Parsons klinken zoals dat bij hem past, compact melodieus en niet deprimerend donker. Veel promotie en publiciteit zou Joseph Parsons nieuwe CD “Heavens Above” eigenlijk niet nodig hoeven hebben. De toegankelijkheid en zeggingskracht van deze plaat zouden in feite al ruim voldoende moeten zijn om ook de Benelux om te krijgen.

Biographie de Joseph Parsons

L’auteur-compositeur Joseph PARSONS, natif de Greenwich dans le Connecticut a passé une partie de son enfance en Louisiane, état dont sa mère est originaire. Dès l’âge de trois ans il commence l’apprentissage du piano, celui du chant à cinq.
A quatorze ans, viennent les premiers accords de guitare et la première compo « Sir Harry », inspirée d’un personnage de la comédie musicale dans laquelle J.P. se produit.

Après six mois de fac, il abandonne les études pour se consacrer uniquement à la musique, jouant seul ou en groupe, toujours du rock acoustique. En 1990, il n’hésitera pas à mettre sa carrière de côté et partira en Irak, militer pour la paix.

A ce jour, Joseph PARSONS a enregistré six albums studios, quatre live, deux albums avec son groupe HARDPAN et deux autres avec son autre groupe 4 WAY STREET. Deux best of ont également été édités.

Après avoir travaillé avec le label SANCTUARY Records aux USA, son nouveau groupe a signé avec DAD Rock Records. Sa carrière solo est gérée par le label allemand BLUE ROSE Records. Son dernier disque a été enregistré en France.

Un de ses vœux les plus chers serait d’être produit par un label français, afin de se faire connaître d’un plus large public et de pouvoir séjourner plus longuement dans notre pays qu’il affectionne particulièrement.

Actuellement, quand il ne tourne pas aux USA, en Allemagne, aux Pays-Bas, en République Tchèque, en Italie ou en France, il vit à Philadelphie.

Parlant de son métier PARSONS dit : « j’ai toujours aimé enregistrer des albums, mais il y a une grande différence entre le travail en studio et la performance scénique. Pour moi, ce sont deux formes d’art complètement distinctes. Le studio me permet de créer un univers musical. En concert je réinvente cet univers avec l’énergie du public, de manière à ce que nous puissions créer ensemble quelque chose de neuf, et les performances scéniques ne se ressemblent jamais… »

Joseph Parsons has always created his own unique vibe. For the recording side of his music, it is edgy melody focused songwriting. He brings a heart and soul to his songs through energy and emotional honesty. Often stories of people caught in hard times seeking salvation through love or a spiritual connection. Genres run the gamut from SingerSongwriter to Pop to Groove. His CD's are always a journey for the listener.

For his live show, Parsons takes a different approach. The live band show is a Rock show. Touring as a guitar centered 4-piece (drums, bass, electric, acoustic and several vocals), he put's on an incredible show. Charisma, vocal prowess, a great band and a select cover or two, Parsons' shows are always energetic, often bombastic.

A perpetual traveler, Parsons has seen much of the world through the wide eyes of a human activist. Spending time as a human shield in war zones or supporting Native American injustices, Joseph makes no bones about getting involved. And that's exactly what he brings to his music.

A deep romantic, a student of the human condition and being an experienced producer enables Joseph to express with pin-point accuracy. A recent quote "an experienced dealer of emotions" says it all.

The Fleury Sessions

Released August 25, 2006 in Europe on Blue Rose Records.

Following a successful run of European dates, Joseph Parsons and his touring band camped out a small studio outside Paris.  The fruit of their labour, The Fleury Sessions, captures the band at its most cohesive and lends an unstudied organic feel to a new batch of songs that will delight Parsons’ growing fan base.

There is a bright, breezy, optimistic flow to theses songs that belies the current state of the world but underscores our need to cut through to the light that is always just beyond the darkness.

The band assembled for this project includes Parsons on guitar and vocals, Tom Gillam (lead guitar), Scott Bricklin (bass) and Matt Muir (drums).  The band amplify the strong sing-along melodies with bright vocal harmonies that are reminiscent of Parsons work with 4 Way Street on the Pretzel Park album.

The Fleury Sessions kicks off on an upbeat note with Sun’s Gonna Shine and it seems nothing is going break Parsons’ mood.  We are introduced to the guitar work of Tom Gilliam, who weaves his signature throughout the proceedings without ever overpowering the solid work of his fellow musicians. On the opener he brings to mind the late Beatles era George Harrison.

The album continues on a front porch country rock trail through Fool Again and Taken By Surprise until we arrive at Shine (in many ways a foil for Sun’s Gonna Shine).  This takes us to the underside with more Gillam guitar licks, this time with an emotional intensity that will appeal to fans of David Gilmour.

King of Baltimore would shine among the works of John Fogerty, Dave Edmunds or Tom Petty but it is pure Parsons – narrated by the vagabond man and populated by “gypsies, beggars and one-eyed men.”

By the time we reach First Sight it’s evident that the band is still having a good time.  The melody is memorable – you’ll be singing this one in the shower and who will argue with the concept of love at first sight?

This is a joyous album.  It captures a songwriter at the top of his game in the company of skilled musicians who know how to let the music lead where it will.
